Dear OPSEU members,
Looking for something to do on the evening of March 28th? Why not throw an Earth Hour party? The first 30 OPSEU members who submit a photo of their Earth Hour get-together will receive $25 to help with refreshments.
Earth Hour is inspired by the WWF (World Wildlife Fund). The idea is to turn off all your lights between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 28 and be part of a global action that is hoping to reach over one billion people in 1,000 cities. Earth Hour began in
OPSEU’s Executive Board endorsed Earth Hour in 2008. OPSEU turned the lights off in our four owned buildings. OPSEU has signed up again and will extend Earth Hour to as many of our leased offices around the province as possible.
As in 2008, we are encouraging you to flick the switch for Earth Hour (or longer) to share your concern about climate change. You can download and print an Earth Hour participant or party host window sign. OPSEU is going one step further this year and encouraging you to host an Earth Hour party. It could be as simple as a candlelight dessert or a walk in the park. Or perhaps board games or music making?
$25.00 prize criteria
Open to all OPSEU members. Party must have a minimum of five people. A photo should be time and date-stamped and received by email no later than Wednesday April 1 at 5:00 p.m. All lights must be off in the photo. Send your pics to earthhour@opseu.org. The first 30 members to submit their pics will win a prize. We will post the photos on OPSEU’s environmental blog – GreenUnion.

I think Earth Hour is a worthwhile (if token) idea and I'm glad to see the OPSEU exec endorse it. I'm strongly in favour of encouraging everyone to work together to reduce energy use. Kudos for publicizing the issue!
However, as an OPSEU member, I am appalled that we're paying $750 (30 x $25) for a bunch of random party snapshots.
It's fine to invite people to send photos, but spending the equivalent of a worker's annual union dues crosses the line. People are worried about the economy and about their jobs. Reduce our dues and put that back into the pockets of OPSEU workers and their families, don't throw it away on silly little projects.
Wasting money is as bad as wasting energy. You should be ashamed of yourselves.
This is a wonderful idea for all OPSEU members to embrace. Especially because we are going through difficult times....why not get together with family and friends to celebrate Earth Hour 2009.
For one hour, we can make a difference by being silly and turning out our lights!

Hello,
I really like Earth Hour idea and I believe it raises awareness about our environment.
Only thing I have objection to is closing blinds in the office for the whole weekend. It can completely kill some light sensitive indoor plants that I really passionate about. We have a lot of live plants in our aria that create very nice green environment everybody can enjoy. It will be very ironic and sad to see all those plants harmed by the 2 days of darkness created in the office. Plants need light!

INCENTIVE IS GOOD. BUT $25X30 MAYBE NOT STRONGLY SUPPORT THIS INCENTIVE.
EVERYONE HAVE PHOTOS WITH 5 FREINDS SHOULD GET THIS $25! Aha! Just kidding.
Glad to see there's some discussion taking place. So far, 9 people have submitted their Earth Hour party photos.
Perhaps next year we may consider making a $25 contribution to WWF for each Earth Hour party instead of a direct incentive to members.
